Intake of tomatoes has long been linked to heart health. Fresh tomatoes and tomato extracts have been shown to help lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. In addition, tomato extracts have been shown to help prevent unwanted clumping together (aggregation) of platelet cells in the blood - a factor that is especially important in lowering risk of heart problems like atherosclerosis. (In a recent South American study of 27 vegetables, tomatoes and green beans came out best in their anti-aggregation properties.) But only recently are researchers beginning to identify some of the more unusual phytonutrients in tomatoes that help provide us with these heart-protective benefits.

In year 2014 the total volume of the Iran's tomato (fresh tomato) produced was 800,000,000 tons which has experienced a 9% annual growth since 2011 on average.

Tomato is mainly consumed in three ways:

  1. Ketchup and tomato based sauces and ready meal
  2. Tomato paste in cans which are used in home food cooking directly
  3. Fresh tomato

 

Tomato of Iran exported equivalent to 143,000 tons in year 2014 which have accounted for about 4% of total volume of produced fresh tomato and rose by 14% annually over the past four years.

 

The total value of the Iran's tomato exported amounted to USD 86.54 million in 2014. The main markets for  Iran's tomato export were respectively: Iraq, Afghanistan, Russia, United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan. The revenue generated by export to Iraq alone was amounted to 75.8 million dollar which is more than 85% of total fresh tomato export revenue.
